  6. Recycled radioactive food cans on market

  9. RADIOACTIVE metals from the nuclear industry are being treated and recycled
  10. by British Nuclear Fuels for use in making food and drink cans.
  11.  
  12. Already more than 7,000 tonnes of metals have been sold on the open market.
  13.  
  14. The process has been approved by the Environment Agency, which said
  15. yesterday that it had granted British Nuclear Fuels permission to recycle
  16. the metals "because we are satisfied the levels of radioactivity are safe".
  17.  
  18. Aluminium and some steel from inside nuclear installations are being treated
  19. in acid baths in a process invented at the British Nuclear Fuels site at
  20. Capenhurst, near Chester, with the existing low-level radioactivity being
  21. reduced to "safe release levels".
  22.  
  23. However, some environment and consumer groups are voicing concern. Jeanette
  24. Longfield, co-ordinator of the National Foods  Alliance, the umbrella food
  25. safety organisation, said: "The food industry needs this like a hole in the
  26. head. It is an unnecessary risk."

  28. Dr Richard Dixon, leading researcher for Friends of the Earth, said the type
  29. of radioactivity would be of a different kind from that coming from nuclear
  30. plants, and there was a greater chance of a uranium particle escaping and
  31. being taken up by the bones in a human body.

  33. "This recycling is unacceptable. Even the British Government is now saying
  34. there are no safe levels of radiation," he said.

  48. Earlier today IAA members met with representatives of Rock
  49. Island High School in Illinois to present information and
  50. express objections to the donkey basketball game scheduled for
  51. this coming Thursday, April 17th.  
  52.  
  53. I just received notification from the school's principal and
  54. the PTA president that they have decided to cancel the game.
  55.

  73. There is a McD advert being made this week in the London area - already
  74. the filming of the said advert was disrupted today (14th April) with
  75. balloons, heckling and general disruption.
  76.  
  77. A whole stack of leaflets were handed out (more than on usual
  78. leafletings) and the atmosphere was very positive ... the filming was
  79. taking place on council property which they had generously rented to the
  80. McD Corp ('one small step for a council one more big piece of land for
  81. corporate UK ltd') - many of the councillors claimed not to know of such
  82. skulldugery and the local press etc turned up and reported on it ...
  83.  
  84. ... anyway, there is more filming tomorrow/ today (Tuesday, 15th April)
  85. - at the same location in Hackney, London - a similar action last year
  86. (also in Hackney, Victoria Park) cost McD 1,000s and this time it should
  87. be similarly effective. They start filming some time around 10am and go
  88. on for most of the day so if you can make it down some time during the
  89. day that would probably be most appreciated.

  103. amused and otherwise occupied. Most of the shooting involves 'high
  104. shots' so something to obscure elevated areas would be good - balloons,
  105. hanging banners, indian rope tricks etc ...
